Artist Statement
I have been interested in art for as long as I can remember. As a child, my mother would get art projects for me every summer and I would spend hours working on them. Once completed, my parents would praise my efforts, which made me want to paint even more. On vacations we sometimes would visit art museums, which at the time seemed a little boring, but left a lasting impression.I appreciate all forms of art, but abstract art is the most interesting to me. As an abstract artist you can paint what you feel rather than what you see. It is very liberating. Starting with a blank canvas can be a little daunting but also full of possibilities. To me, choosing the right color scheme is vital. I use acrylics because of their ease of use and versatility. Sometimes I will add gel mediums to help create texture. Some mornings I wake up with a design in my head and cannot wait to get it on paper or canvas before I forget it. Other times, I may see a combination of colors that I have to try. For me, the enjoyment of painting comes from the unknown. I can still hear one of my abstract instructors telling me "Sharon, you're thinking too much!" At that point I step back and let the paint guide me. By the time I finish a painting, it is usually quite different from what I thought it would be, and that is the fun of it. The title of one of my early paintings, "Exploration" aptly describes my process. Music is also a great inspiration. Sometimes I just listen to music and let the paint flow. "A to Z 23.1" is an example of that process. Other paintings are based on more organic themes such as geology, space, and weather.Art brings so much joy to my life, my hope is that it will bring joy to others as well.
